HMS Quadrant (G11) was a
Q class destroyer laid down by R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Limited, at
Hebburn-on-Tyne in
England on
24 September 1940, launched on
28 February 1942 and commissioned on
26 November 1942. She was manned by Australians but remained the property of the
British Government.
Quadrant was engaged in convoy escort duties in the
Arctic,
South Atlantic and
Indian Ocean. She took part in the North African landings,
aircraft carrier strikes against
Surabaya and bombardment of the
Nicobar Islands. She served with the
British Pacific Fleet in 1945 where she took part in operations against
Formosa (Taiwan),
Okinawa and the Japanese home islands and served as a troop carrier from
New Guinea to
Australia.
Quadrant was purchased by Australia and commissioned into the
Royal Australian Navy at
Sydney on
18 October 1945 as
HMAS Quadrant.
